Lakou Health · Meet the Founder

Kessy Joseph, MD

The physician behind Lakou Health.

Board-certified in Internal Medicine
Board-certified in Obesity Medicine

My path to medicine—and to founding Lakou Health—has been shaped by my Haitian roots, my experiences across cultures, and my own journey with weight and metabolic health.

Roots, education & a wider perspective

Originally from Canada and raised in Florida, I grew up with a perspective that crossed borders. I earned both my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Health Education from the University of Florida, where I developed a foundation in helping people understand their health and make meaningful changes in their lives.

Medical school brought me to Dominica, the Nature Isle, known for its 365 rivers. Living there deepened my love of nature and sparked a lasting interest in holistic living. Surrounded by the island’s lush landscape, I began thinking more deeply about the relationship between how we live and how we feel: the food we eat, the ways we move, our environment, and our connection to ourselves and others.

My clinical training took me to Brooklyn and Uganda, and I completed my Internal Medicine residency at Rutgers Health in New Jersey. These experiences exposed me to different communities, healthcare systems, and circumstances. They strengthened my belief that good care begins with understanding the person—their history, resources, culture, and daily realities.

A journey I understand personally

My interest in metabolic health is personal as well as professional.

I have spent years navigating weight struggles, obesity, and metabolic concerns myself. I understand the frustration of making an effort and feeling that your body is not responding as you hoped. I know how exhausting it can be to search for answers while wondering whether anyone truly understands what you are experiencing.

My relationship with food has evolved, too. I explored veganism and now follow a flexitarian approach. That journey helped me appreciate the importance of flexibility, nourishment, and finding habits that fit a person’s life. It continues to shape the curiosity and compassion I bring to conversations about nutrition and health.

Why I created Lakou Health

I created Lakou Health for people who have felt unheard, discouraged, or left behind in their pursuit of better health.

That includes people navigating persistent weight concerns, PCOS, menopause, hormonal changes, and questions about their metabolism—especially those who have been offered oversimplified advice when they needed a thoughtful evaluation and ongoing support.

As a physician board-certified in Internal Medicine and Obesity Medicine, I bring a medical perspective alongside an appreciation for nutrition, lifestyle, and the whole person. My interests include metabolic health, healthy aging, longevity medicine, and the evolving science of peptide therapies. I approach emerging treatments with curiosity and careful attention to evidence, safety, and individual needs.

At Lakou Health, my aim is to help people better understand their bodies and explore a personalized path forward, with room for honest questions, shared decisions, and sustainable change.
